Abide – Living in the Will of God – John 8:12-30 (Russ Muse)

In this passage, we see Jesus speaking to the people at the end of the Feast of Tabernacles. During this feast, there are rituals that involve water and light, and Jesus has been introducing Himself more and more, connecting to the symbolism the people understood.  Even so, while many believed, others thought he was a lunatic.

In verses 26 and 28 particularly, we see Jesus describe Himself in a way that we should pay attention to.  There are direct applications we can make to our own lives.

Jesus is …

1. One who was sent
 (v. 26) – “He who sent me is true.

We are also sent. Each day when we arise, we don’t know what the day will hold.  We may have some plans, but God is sending us into our family circle (don’t bypass your family), our workplaces, our friendships, and He may have something special for us to say or do.

2. One who hears (v. 26) – “I declare to the world what I have heard from Him.”

It is important to listen well to what God is saying.  Earlier in John, we see Jesus pausing to write in the sand. Was He possibly listening for God to instruct Him about how to handle the situation?  We would be wise to pause and do the same.  He can speak to us in many different ways.

3.  One who does nothing on His own initiative (v. 28) “…I do nothing of my own authority.”

We can also wait to do things until we have clear direction from the Father.  He will empower us with what we need to carry out His will.

4. One who is taught (v. 28) “…speak just as the Father taught me.”

We should be continual learners, investing time into growing in our walk with God and listening for what God is teaching us day by day.

What would it be like if we woke up every day, wanting to do the will of the Father, and knowing our “food” is to do His will? May our desire grow to be ones who are sent, who hear, who do nothing on our own initiative, and who are taught.

Reflection Prompters

1. Jesus messed with the people’s traditions.  What sacred cows might you be holding on to that God may want to free you from?

2.  When have you recently heard from God?

3.  Have you had an experience where you know God sent you into a situation and sensed Him using and empowering you to help someone else?

4. How can you make it a habit to wake up with these four characteristics in mind, and go into your day listening well and acting only as the Father guides you?

5.  Truths to meditate on, write out, and pray over:

  • I am a person who is sent by God into certain circles and situations.
  • I want to listen carefully to God.
  • I want to do as Jesus did – acting not in my own initiative but in my Father’s.
  • I want to continue to learn and grow in my faith.
