Review

We often long for the “warm fuzzies” of God’s love and care. We welcome His power when it benefits us—but we hesitate to face the side of His nature that makes us tremble. Yet holy awe has its rightful place. Like the children in The Chronicles of Narnia who learn that Aslan is not safe but good, we too must recognize that the Lord’s power is both fearsome and faithful.

In Psalm 29, David calls us to ascribe—to give credit and honor—to the Lord for His unmatched greatness. The psalm reveals the active, dynamic, commanding, and creative presence of God through two intertwined themes: Power and Majesty.

Power
The voice of the Lord thunders over the waters, breaks mighty cedars, flashes forth flames of fire, and shakes the wilderness. His word commands creation with unstoppable force—displaying the raw strength of divine authority.

Majesty
That same voice causes Lebanon to skip like a calf and Sirion like a young wild ox—imagery that captures creation’s trembling joy before its Maker. It is also the voice that makes the deer give birth, a tender reminder that God’s strength is never divorced from His gentleness. The One who shakes the earth is the same One who sustains life and reigns in serene authority as eternal King.

To truly know God, we must hold both realities together—His comforting care and His awe-inspiring power. When we do, our hearts echo the cry of verse 9: “In His temple all cry, ‘Glory!’”

David concludes with a prayer, asking the Lord to give strength to His people and bless them with peace—a fitting end to a psalm that reveals both the might and mercy of God.

May we live in reverent awe of the God whose voice both shakes and stills—whose glory thunders in the storm and whispers in the calm.

Remember

The voice of the Lord can shake the earth—or calm the soul. In Psalm 29, David calls us to stand in awe of the God whose power and peace flow from the same throne.

Reflect

1. Psalm 29 calls us to stand in awe of God’s voice that both shakes creation and sustains life. In what areas of your life do you need to recognize God’s power and authority, even if it feels overwhelming?

2. Reflect on God’s majesty and gentleness in Psalm 29—the deer giving birth, Lebanon skipping like calves. How do you see His power and tenderness working together in your own life and in the world around you?

3. Romans 1:20 reminds us that God’s invisible qualities are clearly seen in creation, and Numbers 16 shows the danger of failing to honor His authority. How does Psalm 29 deepen your understanding of God’s glory revealed in nature and the importance of reverent awe and obedience?

Respond

Take time this week to intentionally notice God’s power and majesty in creation. Watch a sunrise, listen to a storm, or observe the life around you. Reflect on how His voice is at work both in the world and in your life. Consider journaling your observations and moments of awe, then offer them back to God in gratitude and surrender.

Prayer:
Lord, You are mighty and majestic—Your voice shakes the wilderness and sustains life. Help me to stand in awe of Your power and to rest in Your gentleness. Grant me strength to follow You faithfully and peace to trust Your authority in every part of my life. May my heart continually cry, “Glory to You, Lord!” Amen.
