Key Insights
In Ephesians, Paul outlines:
The Call – Be imitators of God
The Way – Be filled with the Spirit
The How – Create space for the Spirit to fill you by asking Him
A Spirit-filled life will:
- Be shaped by God’s Word and marked by worship
- Express gratitude as a sign of dependence on the Spirit
- Carry a tone of submission in relationships
Submission by Role:
Children
- While growing up, children are called to obey their parents.
- As adults, the call shifts from obedience to honor—respecting the role of parents, even if they were imperfect. Honor is lifelong; obedience is for a season.
- Honoring doesn’t mean the absence of healthy boundaries.
Parents
- Nurture your children in the Lord—care for their hearts.
- Ask thoughtful questions: “Was this a good decision?” “How is your heart?”
Discipline with love, not severity. Avoid frustrating them with harsh authority. - Teach the Lord’s ways in daily life.
- Respect their transition into adulthood—offer guidance only when invited.
- Grandparents: support, but don’t override the parenting role or tell your adult children how to parent their children.
Without the Holy Spirit, parenting or grandparenting well is impossible.
Slaves/Masters
While slavery was common in Paul’s day, the principles extend to modern workplace roles:
Employees – Respect authority, work with excellence, and fulfill responsibilities.
Employers – Lead with integrity, honor godly principles, and treat others with care and fairness.
Living with a Spirit-filled, submissive tone fosters relationships full of grace and love. and reflects Christ’s relationship with the church.
