Growing in Capacity: Receiving More of God’s Love
As we study Ephesians, Paul’s prayer in 3:14–21 marks a powerful conclusion to the first half of the letter. It shifts our focus to the heavenly realm—a present spiritual reality—and how that transforms our earthly lives.
Key Insights:
- Heavenly places are not distant; they’re present and active now. Jesus reigns there above all powers, and from this realm, spiritual blessings flow into our lives.
- We have every spiritual blessing because God chose us to be holy and blameless—not burdened by shame.
- Paul lives aware of a spiritual reality – a spiritual realm – that many never see. Spiritual growth means living aware of this unseen realm. One outcome is that It changes how we endure trials—we fight spiritual battles alongside and with the power of the Spirit, not against people.
- Paul reminds us that spiritual warfare against the powers and principalities in the heavenly realms is real, but the victory is already secured in Christ.
- Paul further says the manifold wisdom of God will be made known to the powers and principalities in the heavenly places by the church (Ephesians 3:10).
The Mystery Revealed:
- Through Christ, Jews and Gentiles are united. This radical unity, revealed by the Spirit, breaks down all walls of hostility.
- Today, that same Spirit calls the church to live in unity despite our divisions—denominational, political, or otherwise.
Paul’s Prayer:
Paul prays for a deeper experience of God:
- To be strengthened with power through the Spirit in your inner being.
- For Christ to dwell in our hearts through faith.
- To grasp the vastness of God’s love—its breadth, length, height, and depth.
- To be filled with the fullness of God.
He ends with a bold declaration: God can do far more than we ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us.
Let’s keep growing in our capacity—so God’s love overflows in us and through us.
Reflection Questions:
- Where in your life do you need to become more aware of God’s spiritual reality?
- Are you fighting your battles as spiritual ones—or simply as human struggles?
- What walls of division do you see around you? How might God be calling you to unity?
- How would your life change if you truly grasped the fullness of Christ’s love for you?
- Are you asking God to increase your capacity to receive His love and live in His power?
