ABIDE – How the Journey from Believing to Receiving Happens – John 3:31-45 (Russ Muse)

In the account of the wedding at Cana, we see Jesus’ extravagant compassion. In the account of Him overturning the tables of those doing business in the temple, we see his passion for His Father. The next story, of Jesus’ interaction with the woman at the well and the Samaritans that came to believe and receive Him reveals more about Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus’ existence centers on doing the will of His Father. He refers to this as his “food.”

His own didn’t receive Him, but the Samaritans believed and received, asking Him to stay with them for a couple of days – and He did.

Jesus was comfortable going where He was not wanted.

When Jesus has engaged with others, He doesn’t press them for “a decision.” He doesn’t give altar calls, He simply follows the lead of His Father through the Spirit.

A person coming to receive Jesus, not just believe, is the work of the Spirit – we have nothing to do with it. We are invited by God to participate and share, but we can rest in the fact that the Spirit will work in the person’s life. This provides tremendous freedom from worrying about results, and instead an opportunity to watch the exciting things God does.

1. What have you learned about Jesus from these three accounts so far?

2. Which of the three situations involving Jesus has resonsated with you the most personally? Why?

3. If someone were describe what motivates you, what would they say?

4. Are there people in your life for whom you are concerned regarding their spiritual condition? Spend some time in surrendering prayer about them, releasing any sense of being responsible for their relationship with God.
