Naomi and God: It’s Complicated
Ruth 1:14-22 Speaker: Russ Muse
Key Insights to Review
You’ve probably seen the phrase on social media: “It’s complicated.” Naomi could relate—especially when it came to her relationship with God.
What was meant to be a temporary stay in Moab turned long-term. In that foreign land, Naomi lost her husband and both sons. It was a season of deep grief and disorientation. And yet, amid the sorrow, she formed a strong, loving bond with her daughters-in-law. Her influence was so powerful that one of them, Ruth, chose to remain by her side—declaring allegiance not just to Naomi, but to Yahweh, Naomi’s
Naomi decides to return to Israel, drawn to the place where she knows God is at work. But she doesn’t mask her pain. She tells her people—who are delighted to see her again after ten years—to call her “Mara,” meaning “bitter.” The warm welcome she receives speaks volumes: Naomi’s life had clearly left an impression. Despite all her hardship, she was remembered with affection and honor. Her presence had mattered—deeply.
Even as she grieves, she refers to God as Yahweh and Shaddai (Almighty)—acknowledging His presence even as she wrestles with His providence.
Naomi’s faith isn’t polished or pretty—it’s real. Messy. Honest. Her theology isn’t shaped in comfort but in famine, widowhood, and loss.
She doesn’t offer a tidy testimony. She gives us something raw and vulnerable—something desperate. She speaks His name even when she feels abandoned. She affirms His sovereignty, even when it stings.
And still, she moves toward Him. She keeps talking to Him and about Him.
That’s not a lack of faith. That’s a deep, courageous kind of belief—one we rarely allow ourselves, let alone others. We forget that faith and sorrow, trust and lament, can coexist.
But Naomi reminds us: God can handle our complicated. And He invites us to bring it to Him.
A Simple Reminder
Naomi’s story shows us that faith can be raw, honest, and deeply complicated. Even in grief and doubt, she influenced others and moved toward God. Her life reminds us that God welcomes our questions, our pain, and our imperfect faith—and meets us in the middle of it all.
