The Powerful God Behind the Plagues
Exodus 7:14 – 11:10
Think about a demonstration of power and authority that takes your breath away—perhaps a tornado or hurricane, a rocket launch, or an unforgettable moment in a movie. Those displays pale in comparison to the ten plagues God sent over what was likely several months, compelling Pharaoh to release the people of Israel.
Each plague corresponded to an Egyptian god, demonstrating that the Lord alone has authority over every power people trust in. The ten plagues were: water turned to blood, frogs, gnats, flies, death of livestock, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and finally the death of the firstborn.
The plagues were more than acts of judgment. At first, they were largely inconveniences affecting both Egyptians and Israelites, and Pharaoh’s magicians could even imitate some of them. But as the plagues intensified, God began making a distinction between Egypt and His people. The magicians reached the end of their abilities, while God’s power became increasingly undeniable.
During this time, Moses also grew. The man who once questioned his calling became increasingly confident as he faithfully obeyed God. His influence and respect grew, even among the Egyptians. Pharaoh, however, continued down the path of a hardened heart. Though he experienced moments of temporary regret, he repeatedly chose resistance until God confirmed him in that decision, displaying His own power and glory. Egypt came to see that Pharaoh, considered a divine ruler, could not even protect his own people.
Two lasting truths emerge from these chapters. First, God holds complete authority over every detail of life, yet our response still matters to Him. He is meticulously sovereign while inviting us into relationship and participation in His work. Second, because nothing is beyond God’s power or control, we can bring every worry and need to Him with confidence.
Hard things will pass, but God’s glory never will. In every trial—from life’s inconveniences to its deepest losses—we can ask, “God, what are You doing? Show me Your power,” and trust His comfort, His care, and His purposes.
REMEMBER
God’s power invites our trust and our obedience.
REFLECT
As you read through the ten plagues, what do you notice happening with God, Moses, Pharaoh, the Egyptians, and the Israelites in each plague? How do you see each of them changing—or not changing—as the story unfolds?
Where are you tempted to focus more on your circumstances than on God’s power and authority? How does this passage encourage you to trust Him more fully?
God invited Moses to participate in His work as Moses grew in faith and confidence. Where might God be inviting you to take your next step of obedience and join Him in what He is already doing?
Word of the week: POWER
RESPOND
Lord, You reign above all things,
Your power and glory never fade.
Teach us to trust Your mighty hand
and follow where You lead the way.
When fears and burdens feel too great,
remind us You are always near.
Help us join You in Your work
with humble hearts and faithful steps.
RELATE
Share with someone this week a place where you need to be reminded of God’s power and presence. Ask them, “Where have you seen God at work lately, even in a difficult situation?” Then take time to listen and encourage one another with reminders of His faithfulness.
