In this passage, Jesus gives proof of His standing as the Son of God and Son of Man. This is a massive claim and He provides four witnesses:
Witness 1 – John the Baptist vv. 33-35
-John’s ministry was highly regarded.
-John came to bear witness (i.e. “Behold the Son of God.”)
Witness 2 – Jesus’ Works – vv. 36-38
-The greater testimony is the works and signs that Jesus has done (i.e. turning water into wine.)
-His works are assigned by the Father.
-This would be familiar language to the Jews based on Isaiah 35.
-The works are not an end unto themselves, they point to the Sent One.
Witness 3 – The Scriptures – vv. 39-44
-They bear witness.
-The leaders refused to come to Jesus – people can know Scripture well but still refuse to follow Jesus, and be terrible to be around.
-Scripture is God’s self-revelation to man.
-God is completely expressed in Jesus.
-Jesus points out their affections, not their actions.
Witness 4 – Moses – vv. 45-47
-They hoped in Moses but missed that he was pointing to Jesus
Something to Remember
Our placing faith in Jesus happens because of a miracle God does in our heart, not because of what we’ve done or who we are.
Reflection Questions:
1. Is there a growing revelation of His character and glory in your life? Is Christ being magnified?
2. Is there a growing love and affection for Jesus in your life?
3. Is there a growing evidence of His abiding presence in my life?
4. Ask God – “What are you doing in this situation? How can I participate?”
5. Which of the four witnesses would be most convincing to you?
